Omari Banks Interview: From Cricket to Music and Purpose

There are moments in life that feel ordinary at first, but later reveal a deeper meaning.

I have always believed that we meet people for a reason, even if we do not understand it at the time. Some of the most memorable individuals I have encountered have appeared in the most unexpected places, in everyday settings that quietly turn into something more.

This was one of those moments.

I first met Omari Banks during an intimate evening at the Park James Hotel, where fashion, music, and purpose came together in an unexpected way.

The event, hosted by Do It For The Love Foundation, featured a runway presentation by New York Fashion Week designer Carlton Jones. As guests gathered in the courtyard, Omari first walked the runway, then later returned with a guitar, performing beside the outdoor firepit.

What unfolded was not a traditional performance, but something far more personal. In the quiet glow of the fire, his music carried a depth that felt both rooted and expansive, shaped by culture, experience, and something deeper beneath the surface.

It is often in these unplanned encounters where you recognize a voice that is meant to be heard more widely.

As part of my Voices Shaping Culture, Film, Technology, and Fashion series, I sat down with Omari Banks to explore the journey behind his music, his transition from professional cricket to global artist, and the purpose that continues to shape his work.

Voices Shaping Culture: Omari Banks

Your career path is unique. Before becoming a musician, you played professional cricket. What inspired the transition from sports to music, and how did that shift shape your perspective on creativity and purpose?

What inspired my transition to music was the love and joy I have always felt when playing. Even during my cricket career, I would travel with my guitar from as early as my under-15 days.

I grew up in an environment where music was a big part of my upbringing. I performed in talent shows from the age of six, and my father, Bankie Banx, is a recording artist, so I was exposed to music and great musicians from a very early age.

The shift to making music my main focus came when I felt I had more to say and wanted to express those ideas through writing my own songs. The guitar has always been a place of peace and a refuge during important periods of my life.

I love the feeling of exploring and learning something new every time I pick it up. That curiosity inspired me as a child, and it continues to inspire me now to keep creating, telling my story, and speaking my truth.

Music from the Caribbean often carries deep cultural and spiritual roots. How has your upbringing and island identity influenced your sound, message, and storytelling?

Music for me has always been about expressing something deeper than just excitement. It has been a journey of self-discovery and a process of exploring who I am on a deeper level.

Spirituality is a big part of who I am and who we are as Caribbean people. Understanding my roots and continuing to learn more about my African identity plays an important role in my outlook and songwriting.

The sound of my music reflects both my upbringing in the Caribbean and the experiences I have gained from traveling around the world. I do not see music as something confined to one place.

Music has the power to touch lives beyond where we come from. It is global, and when it is honest, it can be felt everywhere.

I recently saw you perform in an intimate setting by the fire at the Park James Hotel. How do you approach connecting with audiences in quieter, more personal environments?

I believe that wherever you perform, if you put your heart and soul into it and express something sincere, people will feel it.

There is always a level of practice and preparation required for any artist to express themselves clearly, whether through song or instrument. Once that foundation is there, it becomes about the passion behind what you are sharing.

Intimate environments are, in my opinion, some of the most powerful spaces to connect. They allow you to show your true self and create a more personal experience with the audience.

I grew up performing in those types of settings, especially at home in Anguilla, so it feels natural to me. I value the connections that happen in those moments and the genuine emotions you can see from people listening.

Many artists today are balancing creativity with a rapidly changing music industry. What have you learned about staying authentic while navigating the realities of the modern music world?

Music is always evolving, and I believe it moves in cycles. There are influences from both the past and present that shape what we create.

For me, it has always been important to continue growing musically and not place myself in a box. I focus on creating music that I genuinely love and expressing ideas that feel relevant to me.

While the industry continues to change, we still have the choice to hold on to what matters to us creatively. That is the beauty of art. It is subjective, and when you embrace that, creativity has the space to thrive.

Looking ahead, what vision do you have for your music and the impact you hope it continues to have on listeners around the world?

My vision is to continue growing, both as an artist and as a person, and to inspire that same growth in my audience.

I believe growth is essential in life, and music has the ability to encourage us to reflect and ask ourselves important questions that support our development.

Music can inspire, uplift, and challenge us. My intention is to continue creating work that touches people across the world and brings a sense of peace, justice, and unity.

At the core of everything, I believe that love can conquer all.
