Hotel Pet Policies

A Single Woman’s Guide to Pet-Friendly Travel

Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, and for me, it came in the form of a divorce several years ago. Instead of letting this setback define my path, I chose to redefine my life, discovering the joy and beauty single life has to offer. Amidst the chaos, in addition to yoga and daily meditation, I found my reset button – travel.

As a solo female traveler navigating post-divorce life, I refused to let the change in my marital status confine me to a life without exploration. At the beginning of the pandemic, for the first time in my adult life, at age 49, I got myself a puppy—Maximus, the 5 lb Yorkie, and my newfound travel companion. Together, we’ve embarked on a three-year journey that celebrates resilience, independence, and the unbreakable bond between a divorced woman and her beloved pet. Along the way, I’ve encountered diverse hotel pet policies, honing my knowledge of how to navigate the travel landscape as a solo woman with a furry companion. Here are some divorced woman travel tips based on my experiences, including insights into managing hotel pet policies and making the most of the solo female traveler adventure.

Maximus: A Furry Sidekick

Maximus wasn’t just a pet; he was a steadfast partner in adventure. His tiny paws left imprints on paths we walked, cities we explored, and memories we created. As a 5 lb ball of energy, Maximus became more than a furry friend; he was a symbol of companionship, joy, and unexpected support.

Tragically, Maximus, the 5lb Yorkie, passed away in May 2023 due to ingesting poison, leading to kidney injury. To spare him from suffering, I made the heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully. The void left by his absence was profound, and I mourned Maximus’ loss for six months. His memory, however, lives on in the adventures we shared and the love he brought into my life.

Honoring Maximus: A Chance to Give Back

If Maximus’ story touches your heart, and you’d like to contribute to the veterinary expenses incurred during his illness, you can do so on his GoFundMe page. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps honor the memory of a loyal companion who brought so much love and happiness into my life.

A New Chapter with Einstein

After healing from the loss, I decided to open my heart to another furry companion. Enter Einstein, a Yorkie puppy from the same breeder who has brought a renewed sense of joy and adventure into my life. At just five months old, Einstein has already joined me on two solo trips, filling our journeys with the same energy and curiosity that Maximus once did.

As promised, here are all the details for traveling with your pet like a pro, including insights into hotel pet policies. Read about how to fly with your pet here.

My Top Two Luxury Pet-Friendly Hotels: Experiences Beyond Expectations

In my travel adventures with Einstein, the 5 lb Yorkie, I’ve had the pleasure of staying at some truly exceptional pet-friendly hotels. These luxury pet-friendly destinations went above and beyond to ensure our stay was not just memorable but extraordinary. As a solo female traveler navigating the world with my furry companion, I’ve discovered the importance of choosing accommodations that cater to both of our needs. Here, I’ll share some insights and recommendations based on my experiences, providing valuable tips for the solo traveler and her Yorkie when seeking out luxury pet-friendly destinations.

The Trump Hotel & Towers in Manhattan, NYC

I recently had the privilege of staying at The Trump Hotel & Towers in New York City, and my experience was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I walked into the grand lobby to the time I reluctantly checked out, every aspect of my stay was marked by luxury, impeccable service, and breathtaking views. The hotel’s location, overlooking Central Park and the iconic Columbus Circle, is unparalleled. The hotel was within walking distance of many interesting attractions, including a dog park.

The level of service was remarkable, evident from the efficient check-in process to the attentive assistance with my requests. The staff’s dedication made me feel valued, and they added personal touches, welcoming me with top-quality dark chocolates and bubbly champagne in my suite. Even my four-legged companion, Einstein, was not forgotten, as they had thoughtfully prepared a plush dog bed, along with water bowls and a box of organic treats and toys.

The 2 Michelin-star fine dining experience at Jean-Georges was a highlight, offering culinary delights that were a delightful journey for the senses. The accommodations themselves were elegant, comfortable, and adorned with tasteful dĂ©cor. The attention to detail, from the pet package to the high-end amenities, was evident and greatly appreciated.

The Trump Hotel & Towers exceeded all my expectations, and its opulence, combined with a convenient location for pet owners and their four-legged guest, made exploring the city a breeze. They even surprised me upon check-out with chocolate gold bars, symbolizing their commitment to providing an unforgettable experience that goes above and beyond. I consider the Trump Hotel & Towers, a five-star hotel in New York City, one of the best dog-friendly hotels.

Buoy Haus a westin hotel at Frenchman’s Reef, St. Thomas

My Buoy Haus experience, nestled within the Westin at Frenchman’s Reef, an Autograph Collection Hotel, was exceptional. Located oceanfront at sea level, Buoy Haus is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. I enjoyed staying in Buoy Haus Villa 3, specifically in room 5331, an oceanfront suite on the top floor.

The Buoy Haus team elevated pampering to new heights, ensuring that my furry companion, Einstein, and I felt like we had discovered a second home. Their dedicated staff member, Jennifer, acted as our guardian angel during our stay, orchestrating every detail, from arranging delightful dinners to coordinating a hotel photoshoot with a makeup artist and photographer.

It was a surprise to have the restaurant chefs personally attend to our table, and even the Director of Food and Beverages extended a warm welcome, making us feel right at home. Dining experiences at Sugarfin, Luna Mar, and Shoreline’s buffet breakfast were remarkable, and room service at Buoy Haus was impeccable.

The Heavenly Spa offered a three-hour self-care experience that was nothing short of exceptional. Buoy Haus, an Autograph Collection Hotel within the Westin at Frenchman’s Reef, is a hidden treasure in paradise, and I’m eagerly anticipating my return to this enchanting haven. The hotel staff eagerly offered to watch Einstein during my massage experience so that I could have some alone time!

The plush bed in our Buoy Haus Villa provided Einstein with a comfy bed for relaxation, while the hotel’s commitment to being one of the best pet-friendly hotels was evident in the welcome kit, including a plush pet bed and a special pet menu. The spa treatments at the Heavenly Spa added an extra layer of luxury to our stay, making it the perfect place for a special treat. The hotel’s unique offerings, such as yappy hours and a dog-friendly vacation experience, truly set it apart as a great place for human guests and their canine companions.

As we explored the oceanfront grounds of Buoy Haus, the beach towels and the availability of a special pet menu for Einstein made it a delightful experience. The hotel’s commitment to being one of the best pet-friendly hotels was evident in the various amenities provided for canine guests, from doggy beds to a doggy bandana. The open arms welcome for dogs of all sizes, coupled with the convenience of dog walking services, made our stay at Buoy Haus even more enjoyable.

Nestled inside the Westin, Buoy Haus combines the charm of a boutique hotel with the best part of a luxury resort experience. The hotel’s proximity to the beach and its location in a dog-friendly environment make it an ideal choice for those seeking a dog-friendly vacation. With easy access to tennis courts, rooftop bars, and private gardens, Buoy Haus promises a fantastic retreat for both human guests and their furry best friends.

As we eagerly plan our next vacation, Buoy Haus remains a top choice for its dog-friendly atmosphere, bottled water for pets, and welcoming atmosphere for dogs of all sizes. The hotel’s association with the Autograph Collection, part of the Westin, ensures that it meets the standards of pet-friendly luxury hotels across the globe. The extra charge for pet-friendly accommodations is a small price to pay for the joy and comfort it brings to our furry companions.

Whether you’re exploring the historic hotels of St. Augustine or the vibrant atmosphere of Miami Beach, Buoy Haus at Frenchman’s Reef stands out as a truly exceptional dog-friendly vacation destination. The hotel’s commitment to providing a special event experience for both human guests and their important pets makes it a standout choice in the world of luxury pet-friendly hotels.

The Pawsibilities of Pet-Friendly Travel for Single Women and Their Furry Companions

As you prepare for airborne adventures with your beloved pet, the journey doesn’t end at the runway. Considering your accommodation is paramount for a seamless travel experience. Delving into hotel pet policies is a crucial step in ensuring a paw-sitively delightful trip for both you and your furry friend.

Tip #1 – Scout Pet-Friendly Establishments

Research and choose hotels that openly welcome pets. Many accommodations, from boutique inns to major hotel chains, offer pet-friendly rooms equipped with amenities to make your pet feel at home. Whether it’s providing comfy dog beds or ensuring hotel rooms are pet-friendly, the right choice can enhance your entire travel experience.

Tip #2 – Understand Pet Fees and Deposits

Different hotels have varying policies regarding fees for accommodating pets. Some charge a one-time pet fee, while others may require a refundable deposit. Be aware of these charges in advance to avoid surprises at check-in. Knowing the cost of pet-friendly amenities, such as a puppy jet lag kit or a complimentary tennis ball, can help you plan accordingly.

tip #3 – CONFIRM SIZE AND BREED RESTRICTIONS

Before making a reservation, confirm the hotel’s policies regarding the size and breed of pets they accept. Some establishments may have restrictions, so ensure that your furry companion meets the criteria. Understanding pet weight limits and breed-specific policies ensures a smooth check-in process.

Tip #4 – Inquire About Amenities

Not all pet-friendly hotels offer the same amenities. Some provide designated pet areas, walking services, or even special menus for pets. Inquire about these offerings to enhance your pet’s stay and make your travel experience more enjoyable. From plush pet beds to a special dog menu, these amenities can make your stay extra special.

Tip #5 – Understand Pet Etiquette

Respectful pet ownership is key to fostering positive relationships with hotel staff and other guests. Adhere to any guidelines provided by the hotel, such as leash requirements in common areas. Responsible pet behavior ensures a harmonious stay for everyone. Treats and doggy beds can keep your pet content and well-behaved.

TIP #6 – PLAN ALONE TIME

If your itinerary includes activities that aren’t pet-friendly, plan for your pet’s well-being during your absence. Some hotels offer pet-sitting or walking services, ensuring your furry friend remains content while you explore the destination. Utilizing such services ensures your pet has a comfy bed and enjoyable activities during your brief separation.

Tip #7 – Provide Emergency Contact Information

Share your contact information and local veterinary details with the hotel staff. In case of unforeseen circumstances, having this information readily available ensures a quick and efficient response to any potential pet-related issues. Access to free WiFi can also be crucial in staying connected and addressing any emergencies promptly.

Service Dogs and Emotional Support Pets: Navigating Travel with Assistance Companions

For those with service dogs or emotional support pets, it’s crucial to understand the additional considerations for seamless travel. Airlines and hotels often have specific policies and accommodations for these essential companions.

Airlines and Service Dogs

Many airlines recognize the importance of service dogs and allow them to accompany their owners in the cabin. It’s important to notify the airline in advance and provide the necessary documentation for a hassle-free journey. Whether you’re traveling with your four-legged friend as a service animal or a furry best friend for emotional support, knowing the airline’s policies ensures a smooth and comfortable flight experience.

Hotels and Assistance Companions

When booking hotels, inquire about their policies regarding service dogs and emotional support pets. Legally, service dogs are typically allowed anywhere their owner goes, while emotional support pets may have specific restrictions. Knowing the hotel’s policies ensures a comfortable stay for both you and your assistance companion. Seek out pet-friendly hotels that not only welcome dogs but also provide amenities like rooftop pools, outdoor pools, and doggie beds, creating an enjoyable experience for your furry best friend.

By incorporating these considerations into your travel plans, you’re not just booking a room; you’re securing a welcoming haven for both you and your furry or assistance companion. So, as you take to the skies and explore new horizons, rest assured that a pet-friendly and accommodating retreat awaits, making your journey truly memorable.
